This ultra-modern carbon plastic reinforced compact car is BMW's answer to the new A-Class vehicle line of Mercedes Benz and the super-mini Audi A1 line. This BMW super-compact car will be powered either by a 3-cylinder or 4-cylinder engine. BMW experts still have to make an official confirmation whether they will continue to stick with their traditional no-front-wheel-drive design concept or make a complete shift to FWD design in order to achieve a lower introductory price.
Development cost for BMW Megacity Electric 2012 is expected to be manageable since it will be sharing the small platform with the company's next generation compact car lines. Work is expected to break ground at its Leipzig plant. The first series will adopt the same cutting edge technology used in BMW's ActiveE car concept and shall feature a synchronous type of electric motor that can deliver 125kW and 250Nm torque.
Thus, as a lead-up activity in its design and development, the ActiveE shall be tested as an everyday-car by select individuals and fleet customers in the US and Europe sometime in 2011. The results derived from this activity shall serve as the overall basis for the refinement of design and development of the EV system of BMW Megacity Electric 2012. The same type of SB LiMotive lithium ion batteries used in ActiveE will also be used in the Megacity EV.
While aspects related to the vehicle assembly shall be worked on at the Leipzig BMW plant, the company will also collaborate with SGL Automotive Fibers GmbH & Co KG and SGL Carbon for the development and production of carbon fiber parts, including clutch components. Carbon fiber is expected to be an integral part of the overall design of this all-electric vehicle. Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics and fibers shall be used in order to maximize capacity and range by drastically cutting overall weight while maintaining durability and rigidity. Most of the work on the carbon fiber components shall be done in the SGL plants in Wackersdorf and Landshut in Bavaria.
